Beauty so wild and overwhelming it perplexes the senses, perfection in the infinitely evocative folds and features of the landscape. Standing on this rocky beach, staring at the endlessly receding contact between sky and water, feels like standing at the very edge of the world. The ocean rages serenely before you, the smashed rocks under cliff faces testifying to the power of stone and water. One feels the smallness of being in this place of raw power and the smile of fortune that has brought you here to this place of beauty.

Dreamscape
High peaks of the Eastern Sierras, clustered with the mighty bristlecone pine, surrounded by rough icy waters of wild winter that threaten to inundate. Rumpled hills and pediments running downhill to the glorious gold and purple sunset sea where grasses and kelp undulate with the energy of the waves and the tides under the water. A red convertible rolls across the landscape, emblem of freedom itself - top down, wheels turning, radio playing The Beach Boys.
A new moon rises as the sun slides slowly below the horizon. Chaos of the coming night looms, but for now serenity prevails.

Gazing across the mist-covered landscape at the immensity of the unknown mountains and valleys that lie before you shrouded in obscuring fog, high in the mountains, separate, other, alone. Yet as the dawning sun begins to disperse the fog, a truth written in the very rocks themselves is there for those who have the eyes to see, the time to look, and the capacity to understand -
Tat tvam asi – that are thou.

Storm Clearing

A storm is clearing, divisions between sea sky cloud and rain still hazy. From behind the lightest part of the clouds hides the sun - promise of self-realization and perhaps the hope of overcoming the dueling nature of light and dark. The clouds create elaborate sky castles, symbol of consciousness and its self-created structures blocking the illumination of the self.

Here, above 10,000 feet, the austere and the fantastic meet. The landscape boggles the mind. With no botanical overburden to obscure the rocks you can see every detail of the geology and it is a feast for the eyes. The immensity of the scale of the forces at work are difficult to comprehend. You stand in an alpine meadow, birds chirping in the bushes and the trail stretching out before you to the summit ahead, so far still to go, looking down on either side at desert valleys that lie below sea level. The rocks are stunningly beautiful, the steep slopes perilous and unforgiving. If anything goes wrong, you're on your own out here. Here, at the edge of the world, you can truly find yourself.

Limekiln

A magical place tucked away in deep ravines that cut the mountains, just a few bends in the river away from the raging Pacific and the stark coastline of Big Sur. A place conquered, abandoned, and eventually reclaimed, yet still it feels wild. The landscape is a jumble of tree, stone, plant, and water, seemingly haphazardly thrown together. The might of the redwoods create an immense living cathedral complete with the music of babbling brooks finding their way through downed trees and giant boulders. A salamander paddles happily in the little pools. Other than the incessant flowing of water the silence is complete. It feels unnecessarily, excessively, and inexorably beautiful.
